Additional Info

This class is designed for go-getters, creatives and independent thinkers who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get on their knees for something cool. If you are looking for an opportunity to make something more detailed, control the texture of your ideas and really push the limits of customizing your cast iron potential, then this workshop is for you!

We’ll start the class out using oil clay to create intricate patterns (ie: your ideas) onto a 7 in x 7 in board where you learn how to turn your 2D images into 3D relief objects. We’ll cover the process of measuring, mixing and throwing the sand molds around your final clay creation in preparation for creating your very own custom cast iron relief sculpture.

After your clay design is finished, we will assemble them into special flasks where they will wait to be covered by sand which becomes the sand mold for casting iron into.

Participants in this class are encouraged to take part in this sand mixing party. We will talk about the methods, mixtures and process for throwing your own sand mold. After the moulds are cured and become hard, each participant will have the satisfaction of pulling out the clay pieces from the sand and finishing the mold by applying a graphite-based wash over the sand for optimal smoothness and casting qualities.

This is an fun and relaxed class open to any skill level willing to try something new. Some of the best pieces are made by novices who are doing this for the first time and just embracing the work at hand. Previous knowledge of the process is helpful, but not at all required.

End Result:

Because you will be using clay to sculpt our your designs and make a sand mold around them, the results are a high-resolution, custom art piece that you made from scratch!

This class accomplishes an involvement into the first critical steps in the metal casting process, and you will leave with the experience of knowing you just made something incredibly unique and straight from your heart.

Everyone's sand molds made in this class will be cast at the public iron pour on February 9th, 2019 at The Crucible Nightclub location.
