Maker Faire at Northern Illinois University -DIY Aluminum pour

  • NIU Convocation Center 1525 W. Lincoln Hwy Dekalb, IL 60115 USA (map)

We’ll be bringing the portable aluminum foundry setup down to the Northern Illinois University this Fall to be part of the first Mini Maker Faire there on campus.

Free and open to anyone who is interested in exercising their maker-potentials, this first-come-first-serve foundry experience is designed to demystify the process of metal casting by having you create your own piece of relief sculpture and take it home that day.

We have created a special new shape for the sand mold blanks offered to participants at this event. Come in with an idea and we will teach you how to scratch it into the sand mold blanks to create a totally unique aluminum casting that you can take home with you that day.

Our supplies are limited while the metal is flowing hot, so make sure to stop back at our early in each workshop session to make sure you get your spot. Participant age is 4 years old and up. What is carved in sand that day, will get poured in aluminum that will be cooled and cleaned up before participants can take them home.

Our focus at this event is to inspire new generations of potential metal-casters out there, and talk about the foundry process with participants while they create something unique using simple tools and pre-made sand mold blanks for them to scratch into and design a medallion that we pour later in the day.
